I love when the city gets dead quiet after a snowstorm. No sounds, no rush, no agendas, everything gets on hold. But that "hold" represents an opportunity that we rarely have: to observe.
And snow is giving me an opportunity to observe my own cultural shock, coming back to the big Metropolis after being in a much smaller place; Gran Canaria- where even the ambulances sound like an ice cream trucks. NYC, where all relationships are transactional, is an enormous contrast with a place where human time is willingly taken and appreciated. To give you an idea, my boyfriend and I walked into an artist studio who joyfully showed us all his sculptures, explaining the elaboration process in detail and not even for a one moment trying to "push" his products on us. He knew that if we felt as passionate about his work as he did, not only the transaction will come, but we will also tell everyone of our experience, as we did. I read not too long ago a study showing that business initiated with the solely intent of making money rarely succeed. Customers don't smell the bottom line but the joy of the craft. Maybe the snow season will give us a different sense of time, to observe our business practices even if it is for a brief moment, before we start splashing slush again.
